Freeway closure set for high-travel weekend

In what might be a masterpiece of unfortunate timing, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) recently announced that it will have to close parts of Loop 202 in Chandler — on the weekend of Mother's Day.

ADOT workers will be carrying out maintenance, including repairing worn pavement, on the Santan Freeway, necessitating a complete closure of the section between the Price Freeway (Loop 101), which is in Chandler, and the Williams Field Road interchange, located in Gilbert.

Among the restrictions and closures drivers will face are the fact that the southbound Loop 101 ramp leading to Loop 202 eastbound will be shut down completely. Traffic traveling south on Loop 101 will need to exit either on westbound Loop 202, or southbound Price Road.

Traffic heading east on Loop 202 in Chandler will be directed to follow northbound Loop 101, while traffic eastbound on Loop 202 can exit at either McClintock Road or Kyrene Road.

Both on- and off-ramps accessing Loop 202 will be shut down at Santan Village Parkway, Val Vista Drive, Gilbert Road, Cooper Road, McQueen Road, Arizona Avenue, Alma School Road, Dobson Road, and Price Road.

Officials are asking people who need to drive on this particular weekend to make their plans well in advance, expect delays, or take alternate routes if possible. Signs and flyer printing can help operations run smoothly in situations like this.

The work will start on Friday, May 10 at 10:00 pm, and continue until the small hours of Monday, May 13.
