Modern childrens sci-fi classic comes to Chandler stage

The Giver, based on the novel by Lois Lowry of the same name, is coming to the Chandler Center for the Arts this November.

The story centers on a boy, Jonas, who is given a special responsibility at the age of 12 in a utopian society. But is their idyllic community all it's cracked up to be?

While everyone is treated equally, no one is allowed to be an individual. Emotions are muted, and the world is strangely colorless and homogeneous. No one experiences pain or joy.

That all changes when Jonas is chosen as the Receiver of Memories, in which the elder called The Giver transfers memories of the lost sensations, both high and low, physical and emotional.

Jonas must make a choice with this new information after finding devastating truths about how this society was formed, the outcome of which could drastically change his entire world.

Lowry, who is now a grandmother, later expanded The Giver into a trilogy of Books, which includes the follow-ups Gathering Blue and Messenger, which take place across vastly different cultures and times while still carrying similar themes.

Plays like this may choose to use banner printing to create stage decorations, marquees and vendor Signs.

The Giver is playing on November 13 at 10 am and 1 pm at the Hal Bogle Theatre at Chandler Center for the Arts at 250 N Arizona Ave in Chandler.
