The 2016 Census has revealed the various educations levels of residents in Sydney suburbs, including some interesting changes since the previous study was carried out.
For example, the suburb of Rhodes used to be derided for the bad stenches resulting from the chemical plants and paint factories operating in the area. However, the suburb has now transformed to a densely populated area that also holds the title as the most well-educated suburb in Sydney. According to data from the Bureau of Statistics sent to Fairfax Media, among the residents in Rhodes over 15 years of age, 27.4% of them hold a postgraduate degree.
Other suburbs on the best-educated list were Westmead, Dawes Point and St. Leonards. Westmead is also where the largest teaching hospital in Australia is located.
Based on a similar study in 2011, the majority of residents with a postgraduate degree lived in the inner west and lower north shore of Sydney. By 2016, new suburbs in Sydney’s northwest and west appeared in the list. The results of the 2017 data show that the people who have received high education are becoming increasingly dispersing across all areas of Sydney.
Universities across Australia are popular among local and international students. Australian residents are also eligible to obtain study loans, making higher education more affordable and attainable to many. Universities also invest heavily in marketing, with flyer printing and distribution carried out frequently to promote their courses and facilities.
