Monkey exhibits to help locals swing into summer

St. Leonards residents planning a visit to nearby Taronga Park Zoo during the school holidays will be able to get up close and personal with some playful primates.

Animal keeper Renae Robinson said the new immersive exhibit will feature a troop of one of the world’s tiniest monkeys, the swinging squirrel.

She said the monkeys will be centre of attention in the display, which is the first one of its type in New South Wales.

According to Robinson, visitors will be able to watch the natural, inquisitive behaviours of the tiny squirrel monkeys first hand. Cute animals like these often become the subject of postcard printing.

She said they spend their time foraging through trees, resting and playing in the sun by stretching out on platforms and branches.

A set of four tiny cotton-top tamarin monkeys will also be the main focus of another new exhibit being introduced at Taronga Park Zoo soon. The four brothers include a set of twins and all are aged between seven and nine.

Robinson said the new cotton-top display was designed to give visitors a chance to get a much closer look at the tiny primates.

She said these two exhibits are just a sample of what can be experienced during a visit to Taronga and urges everyone to make it a `must see’ attraction these summer holidays.
