Lew Evans turned an impressive 100 years old last October but that hasn’t stopped him from carrying out his normal volunteering duties at his local St. Leonard’s bowling club.
The centenarian has been volunteering for over 30 years and helps out in the kitchen as well as making afternoon tea at pennant matches. Clubs and organisations can use printing services to keep the local community in the loop. Lew’s wife Peggy says he is a generous and kind-hearted man.
The couple both began volunteering at the bowling club by helping out with the preparation of meals for club events. Peggy recalls that in the early days there was no dishwasher. All plates and cutlery had to be hand washed, but she said they didn’t mind as they were happy to help out where they could.
Mr Evans said that St. Leonards was his favourite club and he wouldn’t want to go anywhere else.
The couple moved to St. Leonards after Mr Evans retired from the Royal Australian Air Force where he had been a rigger. Mrs Evans says that she and her husband share the happiest home on the planet and their house is full of the nostalgic reminders that span a lifetime.
The couple have been married for 75 years and have three children and 22 great grandchildren.
