Innovative park and plaza for St. Leonards

The community consultation phase is nearing completion on a proposed public park and plaza development for St. Leonards.

It will be built above the North Shore train line in an innovative design responding to the growing number of people living, working, and visiting the suburb.

The 4,750 square metre $20m project will feature elevated boardwalks, an adventure playground, a lawn, barbecue facilities, retail and gardens separated from the rail-line by a 1.7m-thick foundation. Designed to provide greater access to green spaces for the area’s population, parkgoers will have direct access to St. Leonard’s station and its surrounding commercial facilities. In announcing $4.75m of state government funding for the project, Felicity Wilson, the Member for North Shore, reflected that the Plaza will “bring a little bit of New York to St Leonards”.

Billed by the council as “best practice in urban landscape design and safety”, the proposed community space also addresses practicalities such as a safe drop-off zone for the park and station, access ramps and elevator access, lighting and public toilets, and includes upgrades to existing facilities such as the Pacific Highway pedestrian underpass and local bus shelters. Print shops can be called on to provide collateral in support of community consultation processes like this.

The public is invited to submit names and suggestions for the proposed plaza until this Sunday, 11 July. It is intended for construction to commence this year, with the project due for completion in 2022.
