Restoration works on the Longueville Road/Epping Road Garden Beds has received a welcome boost with the recent announcement of funding from the New South Wales government.
A major attraction for visitors and motorists passing the site on their way to St. Leonards, Lane Cove and neighbouring suburbs, the iconic garden beds have been adored by thousands since the 1960s.
The massive display of flowers grew on a sloping lawn which annually included a bed of begonias sign which read ‘LANE COVE’ set into the lower bed’s grassed area.
In 1992, visitors were able to behold the same sign surrounded by a mass planting of Azaleas which created a stunning spring show, the vision of which ignited a great deal of local pride and identity. This picturesque setting was reconfigured during ground works required for the Lane Cove Tunnel.
In 2017, locals called for the garden beds to be restored. The latest $150,000 investment by the State Government was welcomed by Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts who said:
"The Azaleas were planted over 30 years ago and quickly became a must see attraction for those travelling through Lane Cove.
“I was delighted with Lane Cove Council's decision to rejuvenate the Azaleas along Epping Road, and I am extremely pleased that with a contribution from the State Government we will get to see what will be a beautiful final result.”
