A prestigious girls’ school near St Leonards, New South Wales that was built in 1886 is set to receive a major facelift thanks to an application approved last month.
The Wenona School has been the focus of a $34m development application, which has recently been approved by the NSW Planning Department.
The plans advocate for extensions to areas of the school campus and major redevelopment on the site.
A NSW Planning Department spokesman said the application proposed to establish a new six-storey building in place of existing buildings, as well as provide a pedestrian bridge that would cross Elliott Street.
A 25m swimming pool, teaching spaces for technology and sport disciplines, and a ‘Learn to Swim’ school were also planned.
Future Brochures of the school would reveal a new-look educational facility to the one that was originally established 130 years ago, according to the spokesman.
He said that the project, once completed, would provide an improved learning experience for pupils through the replacement of outdated teaching facilities with classrooms that were collaborative and more adaptable.
Printing services were used to exhibit the proposal in August 2015, with feedback from the community encouraged. The spokesman said submissions received totalled six, including foir from the public sector.
Key issues relating to traffic, noise and the development’s impact in regard to local views were raised, but NSW Planning representatives said in a statement that they were satisfied that construction would be undertaken pursuant to conditions.
