Food will be the topic of discussion at special events to be held at the newly opened Hughes Park.
Residents from throughout the area including St Leonards, New South Wales, have been invited to take part in the workshops that will be held regularly at the `Planting Seeds’ community garden in Burns Bay Road.
Hosted by FoodFaith the workshops are held to provide an opportunity for all Australian cultures and faiths to come together, according to a FoodFaith spokesman.
He said the ultimate idea was to identify more sustainable methods of consuming and growing food while also learning about various beliefs, customs and traditions and the different food sustainability practices.
He said attendees will be encouraged to take along note pads, gardening tools and a hunger to learn more.
The initiative has attracted great support with media outlets such as ABC Radio National, which referred to it as helping combat the world’s food problems claiming food was central to issues such as environmental degradation, hunger and obesity.
Organisers said the community gardens will provide opportunities for people to tend their own garden patch as well as assisting others in shared garden beds.
Further skills in recycling veggie scraps and composting will also be taught.
In addition, participants and community members will be able to contribute to the success of the community garden events by the donation of pre-loved magazines, gardening Books and tools.
