College expansion plans set to be fast-tracked

Monte Sant' Angelo Mercy College students from St. Leonards and throughout North Sydney are set to benefit from a multi-million-dollar refurbishment planned for the school.

At a cost of $49 million, the school's upgrade was recently included in a Department of Planning list that featured 11 projects set down for determination in October to help boost economic growth and jobs.

Catering for the needs of 1,200 students, the college's latest project would add learning spaces outside, as well as 12 science labs, sports facilities on the rooftop, a gym, innovation workshop and hanging baskets. The main aim of the project is to establish new wellbeing, innovation and science spaces.

Upgrade applications such as this are often accompanied by a graphic design or concept plan to better illustrate aspects of the proposed development.

It is expected that 181 jobs would be created by the revamp, according to Minister for Planning Rob Stokes. Set to rise to seven levels, the new building's construction will also require the demolition of existing car parking and tennis courts on the site. However, sports courts and three levels of underground parking will feature in the new structure.

Plans submitted to the Planning Department state the college’s expansion works, due to be finished by 2023, would promote:

"Hands-on, inquiry based and industry-focused learning."

In response to some noise concerns by residents, the college has also agreed that sporting courts would be for exclusive use by the school and not available to outside sporting groups.
