City invites nominations for Australia Day Awards

Nominations for community achievers across the City of Willoughby, including St. Leonards, are currently being called for the annual Australia Day Awards.

This year's award categories are Community and Cultural Building, Young Citizen, Environmental Citizen and Citizen of the Year, respectively.

Mayor of Willoughby City Gail Giles-Gidney said the awards provide a great opportunity to recognise the important work many individuals and groups do to improve and help the local community. The presentations, she said, will be a major part of Australia Day celebrations, which will also feature a keynote address and entertainment by a choir and the Willoughby Band at The Concourse, Chatswood.

Last year, tireless volunteer Tanya Taylor won the city's Australia Day Citizen of the Year Award on a day that also saw 70 people become new citizens. A mother of three children, Taylor has led and supported many community and fundraising activities, as well as volunteering at the local Sea Scouts and Willoughby Public School, for which she helped with many fundraising events and the school’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

Flyer printing campaigns have often been used to promote many community events, including award ceremonies.

Australian citizens who attend school, work or live in the City of Willoughby are eligible for nomination in the Australia Day Awards, and those entered across all categories will be considered by the judging panel for the ultimate award of Citizen of the Year. Nominations close on December 4, 2020.
