Andrew Constance, the Roads and Transport Minister, said the innovation came to light during a Parking Innovation Challenge set by the Transport for New South Wales, which invited innovators to discover ways to utilise data for the purpose of delivering information about parking to drivers. He added:
“Technology is continuing to improve the way that we move across Sydney and this will definitely help with reducing the stress of parking. These trials have been developed to help drivers find parking and reduce the amount of time they spend looking for a spot.”
The app was developed by UbiPark and enables people driving within the Chatswood precinct to scan the various parking Signs via their smartphones to reveal the current parking regulations.
Mayor of Willoughby Gail Giles-Gidney was excited with the innovation, claiming it will help to lower the level of traffic congestion surrounding the need to find parking by clearly defining parking costs and times. Drivers will also know that they have found a legal place to park.
Printing services have often been engaged to spread the word about local innovations, such as the new parking app.
This latest innovation follows the introduction of a “park n pay” app last November, which has allowed drivers to pay for their parking at a total of 116 parking meters, including 38 in the CBD of St Leonards.
