Aging Olympic Pool focus of development application

Residents in St. Leonards and surrounding suburbs are set to see a new era dawn at the iconic North Sydney Olympic Pool, which is currently the focus of a major redevelopment proposal.

As part of North Sydney Council’s proposed works, the 50 metre pool will be replaced and new, more modern facilities introduced to meet community needs.

A new grandstand covered by a shade structure, new retail space and a café, plus an outdoor play area, crèche and added gym facilities have all been proposed.

According to Ken Gouldthorp, North Sydney GM, the move to lodge a development application is a big step toward the renewal and repair of the pool facility which was first opened in 1936. Applications such as this have often included a graphic design to give a clearer picture of the full proposal.

The cost of the redevelopment is estimated to be $57.9 million, including $10 million committed to the project by the Federal Government. Mayor of North Sydney, Jilly Gibson expects the development application to draw great interest saying:

“This pool is a much-loved community asset and I know there will be great interest in the details of the application. Council consulted extensively on the design a few years ago, and the DA incorporates much of the feedback we received at that stage.”

The Sydney North Planning Panel will make the final determination on the future of the development application once it has been independently assessed by a planning consultant.
