Expansion plan for Seattle Aquarium

A significant expansion, costing around $90 million, could transform Seattle Aquarium by adding extra exhibition space.

The idea is that visitor numbers almost twice the current average could be accommodated if the initiative goes ahead. Postcard printing in Woodinville could be used to cater for the potential increase in demand. The chief executive of the Seattle Aquarium, Bob Davidson, has said:

"We want to be providing an experience that engages people in understanding the Puget Sound and the Pacific. Our purpose is to help visitors engage with the animals and life in the sea in a personal, visceral context that they can't get from TV.”

Back in 2007, a smaller expansion took place. This involved the creation of an exhibit, and also included refurbishment work.

The envisaged project is quite ambitious compared with its 2007 precedent. Construction on the new initiative is not going to begin until 2019. The building work will only commence if the City Council gives its full backing to the proposals.

An architect has been appointed to take charge of the current plan. The business of Marc L’Italien, EHDD, has experience of delivering aquarium projects. This work included an expansion of an existing aquarium in Chicago.

In 2014, Seattle Aquarium was visited by just over 800,000 people. It has been suggested that well over 1 million visitors could be coming to the building by 2030.
