Veterans' hike scheduled in Vancouver
Military veterans share a unique bond, and one organization is using that to enable veterans to help themselves.
The Irreverent Warriors Silkies Hike-Portland/Vancouver, a day for veterans to come together and use camaraderie and humor to address mental health issues, has been scheduled. Silkies Hikes take place throughout the nation, and are a mechanism veterans are using to bond to support one another. The events are not to bring awareness to veterans' struggles, but to give them a means to connect. For this reason, the hike itself is limited to those on active duty, veterans, reservists, and members of the National Guard.
Civilians are invited to party with their veterans before or after the hike, or meet up with them at various stops along the way.
Organizers suggest that participants bring an extra shirt; extra socks; shower shoes, boots, and tennis shoes; moleskin and Vaseline; eye protection of some kind; headgear; sunblock (and more sunblock); water; snacks, and a backpack.
Hikers must bring a military ID, water, and cash to pay for items at various stops. Weapons of all kinds are banned, and participants are encouraged to carry unit flags, or other military designations (nothing political or religious) and to follow the hike on Facebook.
The Silkies Hike will be held August 22, from 9.00 am until 3.30 pm, and starts at Fort Vancouver in Vancouver. Banner printing can be used to provide appropriate course markers for events like this.
