Vancouver receives state grant for street improvement project

The City of Vancouver recently announced the Washington State Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) has awarded it a grant of $3m to help fund its Southeast First Project.

The project will fund the final part of the so-called Southeast 1st Street Improvement Project, which is the construction of the segment between Southeast 177th and Southeast 164th avenues. The whole project runs from 164th Avenue to 192nd Avenue, and is designed to promote economic opportunity for undeveloped areas in Section 30, as well as within the Columbia Tech Center.

The project will also help to establish connectivity, accessibility, and safety along the corridor by completely transforming what was once a two-lane, rural, farm-to-market road into an urban street. The project will have stormwater bioretention areas, bike facilities, sidewalks, sound walls where they are required to abate noise, and street lights. The total cost of the project is estimated at around $14m. As sections of projects like this are completed, officials could work with a banner printing company to create colorful Banners to celebrate the milestones.

Ryan Lopossa, who is the Streets and Transportation Manager for Vancouver’s Public Works Department, said the city is gaining regional support for its program to improve transportation by taking advantage of federal and state grants to use with local funding. The project has been given a high priority in the Transportation Improvement Program devised by the city.
