Vancouver looking for 15 people to review citys charter

The charter that guides the operations and structure of Vancouver’s government must be reviewed every five years, and that review is upcoming. The city recently asked for volunteers to undertake the task.

Voters approved the charter in 1952, and it must be reviewed in 2019 by a group of 15 volunteers. If the Charter Review Committee has recommendations for changes to the charter, it can bring them to the attention of the city council. If the council approves the changes, or if changes are petitioned by citizens, they are put before the public at the next election. The last review was in 2014, and voters approved changes in November 2015.

People interested in this task must reside within the city limits of Vancouver. The mayor appoints them, and the city council confirms the appointments. The work of the 2019 Charter Review Committee will start in January 2019, with the aim of completing any recommendations by June. These proposed changes will appear on the ballot of the general election in November 2019. Officials charged with tasks like this can use flyer printing to create handouts that provide information about the process to volunteers.

People who are interested in joining the Charter Review Committee must submit their application by October 12. Applications are available online at the city’s website, and more information is available from the city manager’s office.
