Traditional celebration planned in Vancouver

A colorful Mexican tradition will be celebrated soon in Vancouver.

The origins of the Día de Muertos (the Day of the Dead) go back about 3,000 years. A Mexican holiday, Día de Muertos sees families welcome the souls of deceased relatives back to enjoy a celebration that includes food and drink. The Vancouver Ballet Folklórico and local organizations have teamed up to host a Día de Muertos celebration here.

The Vancouver version of the celebration began in 2021, with the Luminarias Dia de Muertos. Held in Esther Short Park, music and dance were used to honor the deceased. In 2023, attendees were able to light luminarias, which are small lanterns, on a “Tree of Life” that had been drawn on the ground. They could also place photos of beloved family members on an altar. They will be invited to repeat those actions in 2024.

The Vancouver Ballet Folklórico event is not as large as the Luminaria, but the troupe has celebrated the festival in venues throughout Vancouver, such as the Vancouver Community Library, The Loft Artist Gallery, the North Bank Artist Gallery, and more. The ballet which was established by Anna Cruz, uses traditional dance to preserve and promote Mexican culture and heritage.

The Vancouver Ballet Folklórico will celebrate the Día de Muertos in Esther Short Park on October 19. Organizers of events like this can use poster printing to create colorful advertising for the occasion.
