Grape pruning class to take place in Vancouver

Washington state produces more wine than any other state in the U.S. except California, so a class in how to prune grapes seems like a good idea for residents.

The Washington State University Extension County Master Gardener Program is the organizer and host of an upcoming workshop on grape pruning. It is possible for people to grow grapevines in their own yards, started from cuttings from other vines. Grapevines must be pruned annually to remain healthy. The upcoming workshop will concentrate on learning to prune young grapevines – young being defined as between one and three years old. If they desire, attendees may take cuttings home.

Those who want to attend the class will need to start by doing some work at home, in the form of watching a video and reviewing a publication that discusses the two most used methods of pruning vines, and propagation basics.

The second step in the process is the hands-on class at the demonstration vineyard. The event is completely outside, and involves a climb up a steep hill. People who have impaired mobility may drive. Attendees are advised to bring pruners or loppers, garden gloves, and water, and to dress appropriately for the weather. Masks are optional.

The program will be held at the 78th Street Heritage Farm, located on 78th Street, on February 11, from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm. Organizers of events like this can enhance learning by using flyer printing to create instruction sheets.
