Christmas classic to be performed in Vancouver

A classic work that has inspired numerous films and television adaptations will be back on the stage in Vancouver.

The Magenta Theater in downtown Vancouver is presenting “Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story,” the timeless story by Charles Dickens. The theater says that their production has been reimagined and is “highly theatrical,” rather than trying to present a realistic picture of Dickens’ London.

The title of his book is “A Christmas Carol,” so the addition of “A Ghost Story” indicates that this production may focus on the paranormal aspects of the tale more than usual. The story centers on the miser Scrooge, who learns the true meaning of Christmas via the visits of three spirits who show him his past, present, and future.

The actors will be narrators and then switch to being characters, and in similar fashion, the actors will approach popular Christmas carols in different ways, singing them joyfully, and then changing to a more sinister approach, giving this production a fresh feeling.

The theater is also taking this opportunity to host a holiday food drive on behalf of Vancouver’s FISH Westside Food Pantry. In particular, they are asking for donations of spices, seasonings, baking ingredients, canned soup, canned meat, coffee, jellies, and jams. There will be collection boxes in the lobby.

“A Christmas Carol” opens December 6 and runs through December 22. Theaters traditionally use posters to advertise shows, which they often obtain from print shops.
