C-Tran board wants I-5 bridge replaced

A number of government agencies in Southwest Washington have been urging state leaders to start the process of replacing the I-5 bridge, and now the C-Tran Board of Directors has joined the effort, according to an article in The Columbian.

The agency recently gave the green light to a resolution as it wants to ease congestion, beginning with the interstate bridge on I-5 between Vancouver and Portland. In addition, the resolution urges adequate funds should be made available to the Washington State Department of Transportation to analyze various options.

Similar resolutions have been passed by many area agencies, but the one adopted by C-Tran is different. This is because C-Tran uses the bridge daily, and its heavy usage is alluded to by the language it used in the document.

C-Tran said it:

“. . . operates the only bus routes on Interstate 5 within Clark County-Portland Metropolitan Area . . . these routes are negatively impacted by congestion, and C-Tran service reliability could benefit from a dedicated lane of traffic for public transportation.”

Officials considering issues like this could use flyer printing to keep citizens informed of developments.

In addition to the dedicated guideway, the agency wants the new bridge to have pedestrian and bike paths, resistance to seismic events, better connections to freight haulers in the area, and a way to resolve conflicts over airspace and vessels in the Columbia River.
