What's Happening in Vancouver, WA…

Burnt Bridge Creek seeks volunteers

An event designed to improve a local waterway is scheduled for Vancouver.

Burnt Bridge Creek runs for approximately 13 miles through the City of Vancouver, rising in Orchards, an unincorporated community east of Vancouver proper, and emptying into Vancouver Lake. The hard-surfaced Burnt Bridge Creek Greenway Trail runs beside the creek for eight miles, and can be used for jogging, biking, walking, and wildlife viewing. The trail is popular and used all year.

The Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership is organizing the event, which will bring volunteers together to plant trees to improve the quality of the water in the creek, as well as restoring native habitat. The site where volunteers will be working is a flat space that will be reached by walking approximately 15 minutes on a paved path.

Volunteers should bring a water bottle and face mask or other face covering. The organizers will provide warm beverages, snacks, extra masks, shovels, and planting gloves that have been sanitized. Volunteers should wear sturdy boots or shoes, rain gear, long pants, and long-sleeved tops. Estuary staff members will demonstrate planting techniques and review health guidelines at the event. Organizers can use flyer printing to create handouts for events like this.

The “Dig it, Plant it, Do it Again!” tree planting is set for February 12, from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm. People of all skill levels and ages are welcome, but space is limited, and everyone is required to pre-register.
