The fall film series from Western Washington University in Bellingham will focus on diversity, supporting the fall’s Western Reads book, ‘Between The World And Me’ by Ta-Nehisi Coates.
Open to the public and free of charge, films will feature a number of film screenings that come from a non-white perspective. Selections span the 20th and 21st Century, offering many commentaries on the world we all share. Each film will be followed by a panel discussion.
The official title of the film series is ‘Diversity and Diverse Voices in the American Cultural Landscape’. Screenings will be held at Western Washington University’s campus, at Bond Hall 105. Films will include ‘James Baldwin: The Price of a Ticket’, ‘Within Our Gates’, ‘Mississippi Burning’, ‘Dear White People’, ‘The Visitor’, ‘El Norte’, ‘Meet the Patels’, ‘Smoke Signals’, and ‘The Fall’. Screenings are often promoted with Flyers.
Each year, Western Washington University chooses a book to give to all incoming students, which is used to provoke conversation and promote intellectual engagement within the community. This year’s selection is written as a letter from the author to his son at age 15, discussing what effect racism had on him during the 1970s and 1980s. It also engages with Coates’ son’s perspective as a millennial.
Films will be screened on Tuesdays at 6:00 pm through November 29. For a complete listing of the films, visit the Western Washington University website.
