Booker T. Jones is known for his skill playing the Hammond B3 organ, but he is even more well-known as the frontman for the group Booker T. & the MG’s, who are credited with helping shape the “Memphis soul” sound. The group was originally the house band of the legendary Stax Records label before they began their career.
Their first notable success came in 1962, when Stax released the group’s single “Green Onions.” It was an immediate hit, with one Memphis disc jockey playing it four times consecutively. The single climbed to the No. 1 spot on the US Billboard R&B Chart, and to No. 3 on the Pop Chart. It was certified Gold and sold more than one million Copies. The song has been used extensively in films, and Rolling Stone put it on their list of 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The subsequent “Green Onions” album was also a hit.
The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, and Jones received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award. A concert review says:
“ . . . the entire crowd [was] rising from their chairs and clapping and cheering for more."
Booker T. & the MGs will be at the Mt. Baker Theatre on October 2. Organizers of these kinds of events often advertise them with Posters, which they can find at local Print shops.
