A weird little stage production that became a film and worldwide phenomenon is coming to Bellingham.
The Mount Baker Theatre started a tradition 15 years ago: screening “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” At first, the film was shown in the Harold & Irene Walton Theatre, which seats 150, but over time, the event became so popular it moved to the Main Stage, where it will appear again this year.
The show was developed by Richard O’Brien, who plays Riff Raff, as a stage show that opened in 1973 and played in several London theaters, closing after a total of 2,960 performances. It won the 1973 “Standard” Theatre Award for Best Musical. A film version was released in 1975, but was not initially successful. It wasn’t until cinemas began showing it at midnight that it became a hit, and is now a global sensation.
Fans have seen it numerous times, making it an audience-participation event, complete with props and “callbacks,” where they yell lines at the screen and act out moments from the film.
In Bellingham, local actors bring the antics of Columbia, muscle-bound Rocky, and the gender-bending Dr. Frank-N-Furter, the role that made Tim Curry a star, to life. The show is a rock musical featuring songs such as “Hot Patootie” and the classic “Time Warp.”
