An acclaimed ensemble that has performed before heads of state will appear in Bellingham next month.
The Soweto Gospel Choir is from South Africa, where it was formed in 2002. The ensemble has over 30 members, and its work blends American pop music, reggae and African gospels. The choir was explicitly created to celebrate African gospel music’s unique power.
The group has collaborated with such artists as John Legend and Peter Gabriel, and appeared on stage with Diana Ross, Bono, and others. It has also performed for people such as Nelson Mandela, Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, as well as numerous rock stars and other celebrities. Prestigious venues like the Royal Festival Hall London and Carnegie Hall have welcomed them. Invitations to perform have taken them to events as diverse as Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s memorial service, and the 2009 Academy Awards.
Their work has earned them five Grammy nominations, resulting in three wins, for 2006’s “Blessed,” in 2007 for “African Spirit,” and 2019’s “Freedom.” They’ve also won a Helpmann Award, two American Gospel Awards, an Emmy, and the first Tower Music African Gospel Award for Best Gospel Group.
Their current tour, “Peace,” will include spirituals, classic, South African freedom songs, and music of legends like Leonard Cohen, Peter Gabriel, Harry Belafonte, and Aretha Franklin.
The Soweto Gospel Choir will be at the Mt. Baker Theatre on Wednesday, December 17. Events like this benefit from publicity generated by colorful Posters, which can be created at Print shops.
