Whatcom Sports and Recreation announced earlier this month that it will be upgrading the Northwest Soccer Park in Bellingham.
Planned in the upgrade are new lights, two new fields made of artificial turf (which will replace a grass section on the west side of the park), and a scoreboard. These renovations are expected to be completed by mid-April 2016.
The state of Washington will provide $2m for the project, and another $700,000 will be donated by Phillips 66 Ferndale Refinery. As this is the largest gift the company has made in Whatcom County, the facility will be renamed Phillips 66 Soccer Park.
Manager of Phillips 66 Ferndale Refinery, Rich Harbison, commented that it took a few years to put the funds together for the park, but it was deemed a project that would greatly benefit the community.
According to the executive director of Whatcom Sports and Recreation, Lance Calloway, having the artificial turf fields and the lights will enable soccer and other sports, such as high school athletic programs and Boys and Girls Club football, to be played after dark and throughout the year.
The fields are currently home to Whatcom County Adult Soccer Association and the Whatcom County Youth Soccer Association.
Whatcom Sports and Recreation is most likely using a local Print company to Print Flyers and other materials with more information about the project and its benefits to the community.
