Indie rock band coming to Bellingham

A band named after a political event is coming to Bellingham.

The Decemberists, who first got together in 2000 in Portland, Oregon, were named for the Decemberist revolt, an insurrection that took place in Imperial Russia in 1825. The founding members were Colin Meloy, John Moen, Nate Query, Jenny Conlee, and Chris Funk, which is still the current lineup, with the addition of touring musicians Victor Nash and Lizzy Ellison.

The Decemberists have released a variety of projects including a DVD, compilation appearances, numerous singles and EPs, collaborative albums, live albums, and nine studio albums. Their first studio album was 2002’s “Castaways and Cutouts,” and the latest is “As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again,” released in 2024. Their 2011 album, “The King Is Dead,” contained the track “Down by the Water,” which won a nomination for “Best Rong Song” at the 54th Grammys.

The band has become known for the way they interact with their audiences during live performances. They may reenact a historical event, typically something of interest to local residents, or have members of the audience act out songs with them.

A review says:
“ . . . these fine purveyors of English folk, indie folk, Baroque folk and more were decidedly none the worse for wear in their typically captivating style.”

The Decemberists will be at the Mount Baker Theatre on August 2. When concerts like this are booked, organizers will often use poster printing to create promotional advertising for them.
