A popular piece of classical music will be performed soon in Bellingham.
The Bellingham Symphony will play the children’s classic “Peter and the Wolf,” featuring Dr. Greg Baker as the narrator. Dr.. Baker is the Superintendent of the Bellingham School District, and his choice is particularly apt, as the piece is used to explain the instruments of the orchestra to young people. Shows like this are traditionally advertised with Posters, which organizers can find at professional Print shops.
Natalya Sats, the director of Moscow’s Central Children’s Theatre, commissioned Sergei Prokofiev to write a symphony especially for children. His composition, which he wrote in 1936, is “Peter and the Wolf.”
The story is a Russian folk tale, told by a narrator, and “illustrated” by the orchestra, who use a different instrument to symbolize each character. These include the flute symbolizing the bird; the oboe as the duck; the clarinet as the cat; the bassoon as Grandfather; French horns as the wolf; woodwinds and trumpets as the hunters; and the strings as Peter. The entire performance is approximately 25 minutes in length, perfect for younger audiences.
Pianist Maria Horja, the winner of the BSO Young Artist Competition, will be featured at the performance. Although the performance is aimed at elementary school-age children, everyone is welcome.
The concert is scheduled for February 6 at 10.00 am at the Mount Baker Theatre.
