CenturyLink recently applied for a cable agreement with Bellingham, potentially enabling residents to have another option for cable television.
Internet services are currently offered by CenturyLink in some parts of the city. The company plans to expand by providing its cable programming and faster Internet speeds by installing fiber optic cables, which run on these services.
According to the vice president of operations for CenturyLink, Sue Anderson, the service is a portable wireless set top box so that it can be taken anywhere inside or outside the home, thereby freeing users from being connected to a wire inside the home. Due to the fiber optic cabling, the response time between changing channels and other services is also faster.
Given previous negotiations the city made with Comcast Xfinity, the negotiation process between CenturyLink and the city could take over a year, according to the director of the Information Technology Services Department for Bellingham, Marty Mulholland.
Anderson added that details regarding the length of the agreement, the fees, the expectations of the city, and access to various educational, government, and public channels need to be worked out.
In preparation for the result it hopes for, CenturyLink might benefit from the assistance of various marketing services to advertise their offerings and promotions to residents of Bellingham in advance of an agreement with the city.
