Bellingham goes to Broadway

For an evening of toe-tapping entertainment, local music enthusiasts will soon be able to enjoy the classic Broadway musical ‘42nd Street’.

Since 1933 when the movie first came out, audiences have enjoyed the lavish song and dance numbers in the age-old story of the poor little understudy ingénue trying to get a chance at stardom.

In this case, a financier hires a renowned Broadway producer to create a new musical revue for his girlfriend to star in. The producer is a demanding boss and pushes the cast to put in a stressful amount of rehearsal time. Subsequently, the star-to-be breaks her ankle and the little understudy takes over the part and becomes a star herself.

This new musical production, which runs 2.5 hours, will still retain those lavish song-and-dance numbers, along with those old classic songs such as ‘I Only Have Eyes for You’, ‘We’re in the Money’, ‘Lullaby of Broadway’ and the title song ‘42nd Street’.

Choreographed by Randy Skinner and co-authored and directed by Mark Bramble, the team that staged the 2001 winner for Best Revival at the Tony Awards, this new production has only been out on tour since last September. Posters for the new version of the old classic have retained the stylized graphic design reminiscent of the early 1930s.

The musical will be presented November 2 at 7:00 pm on the Main Stage at the Mount Baker Theatre, 104 N. Commercial Street, Bellingham.
