The Eastrail project will be receiving $1m each from REI and Facebook.
The trail project will be 42 miles long, running from Renton to Snohomish, with stops at Woodinville, Redmond, Kirkland, and Bellevue on the line.
Officials from REI said that they have supported the project for the last four years, and that it will connect the many communities of the Eastside of Lake Washington with enjoyable and safe trails. They added that it will provide much-needed greenspace, employee hubs, and connections to high-capacity transit, with additional plans for a state-of-the-art fiber-optic infrastructure. The officials also stressed that it will improve the outdoor space that has been the company’s headquarters for the past 82 years.
Print shops are often hired to keep the communities affected informed on the progress of such projects.
REI recently sold its new but unused headquarters property in Bellevue to Facebook, with the social media giant paying $390m. It now plans to move to a more distributed model with corporate operations located throughout the Seattle area.
Currently, there are 13 miles of the trail opened, featuring a segment running along the lake from Newcastle Beach Park in Bellevue to Renton’s Gene Coulon Park. That section will also be paved and parts of the Lake Washington Loop that have been affected by the Interstate 405 expansion will be replaced.
