Brandon Reim, who is a graduate of Bellevue College, recently won an award given by the American Society of Interior Designers for a shipping container project.
Reim’s award was the result of a competition presented to seven universities and colleges in Washington State to create a functional tiny house design.
With the popularity of tiny houses on the increase, the students were challenged with creating a tiny house out of a 40-foot-long shipping container. On top of the space challenges, the students were also faced with having to stay within budget. Those participating in the contest realize that creating a working design could become a career as the demands exist for smaller homes. Updating their résumés and digital Business Cards with their successful designs could be the beginning of a lifetime career.
The designers had to work with creating a living space out of only 320 square feet. Challenges arose with fitting in everyday items such as appliances, beds, and doors. Having to readjust their designs several times during the process proved to be taxing on the designers, but Reim prevailed.
Tiny houses make up less than 1% of all living spaces, but studies have shown that about 70% of those who own tiny houses live mortgage free, compared to less than 30% of owners of traditional sized homes. The market for tiny houses will likely continue to rise and designer Reim has indicated that he may someday join the ranks of a tiny home owner.
