Michael Nassirian, a recently retired executive at Microsoft, is planning to bring a professional basketball team to the Bellevue area.
The team will be based out of Bellevue and form part of the new North American Prestige Basketball (NAPB) league. There will be a contest to name the team, which will begin playing in 2019 – the second season of the league.
The new league was created by David Magley, who is now the COO and president. Currently there are teams in Albany and Rochester, New York, and as far west as Vancouver, British Columbia, and Yakima, Washington. His plans are to double the size of the league by its second season.
Nassirian was attracted to the league not only for business purposes, but also in appreciation of the component of community service that was part of the business model of the league. Teams in the league will be required to work with school systems in their area to deliver messages of positive self-image, anti-bullying, and staying in school.
Nassirian added that he saw Magley’s plans as fitting to the players and the community spirit in Bellevue. Since moving to Bellevue to work for Microsoft, he has become deeply rooted in his philanthropy and business in the city.
