Organization plans new homeless shelter in Bellevue

Congregations for the Homeless (CFH) recently announced that it will be purchasing a surplus parcel of land in King County in Bellevue to build a permanent homeless shelter for men.

The property is located between the Factoria transfer station, Seattle Humane, and I-405, west of the Eastgate Health Center, and is preferred by those in the area as compared to a previous location.

In addition, new zoning regulations were passed by the City Council over the summer and the site complies with those. There is now a highly strict and comprehensive review process for new homeless shelters and many requirements for zoning. Permit requirements for the operation of a shelter require hiring security guards, the completion of background Checks for each resident, and collecting personal data on the residents.

David Bowling, Executive Director of CFH, said the organization had reviewed over a dozen sites. Then seven were evaluated based on 13 strict criteria to ensure that the shelter is viable in the surrounding community, and will effectively serve the men who are homeless.

Bowling added that it may not be until 2022 that the new shelter opens. Until then, banner printing companies can be used for creating displays that can be posted throughout the city so the homeless will be aware of such efforts and where they can go for shelter.
