New urban path planned for Bellevue

A bike and pedestrian corridor running from the park at the waterfront and through downtown to the Wilburton commercial area is being planned for Bellevue.

About two miles in length, this ‘Grand Connection’ would provide a link among such landmarks in the area as Lake Washington, Downtown Park, Old Bellevue, the retail area along Bellevue Way, and the Eastside Rail Corridor.

The budget for the conceptual design and related work is set at $250,000, and the city is looking for ideas from design teams for this corridor, which will span over Interstate 405.

According to Deputy Mayor John Chelminiak, the commercial area in Wilburton is currently undergoing redevelopment. Improvements are being made in sewer and water connections and arterial roads and a light rail station will be opened in 2023. The area will become zoned for retail, residential, and commercial use.

Chelminiak added that there are wide streets and superblocks in downtown Bellevue that makes it very driver-centric but not pedestrian-friendly. The Grand Connection would make it easier for people to walk around in the downtown area and add outdoor cafes, art, vendors, and many other features.

Local Print companies will create mailers to notify residents of open houses where they can contribute their input to the plan. A tentative conceptual design is expected by summer, although no date has been set to start construction.
