The Northeast Gateway of Downtown Park in Bellevue is now open.
The new gateway has a water feature, a pedestrian entrance with a plaza, and seating areas. The gateway strengthens the connection between the commercial district of Bellevue and the park, and it is part of the Grand Connection, which is an interactive corridor focused on pedestrians through the heart of the city. In addition, part of the arch from Union South High School, which stood on the site from 1923 to 1989, has been installed in the formal garden.
The gateway entrance was designed by MacLeod Reckord Landscape Architects, and the contractor for the project was Ohno Touchdown JV.
Lynne Robinson, Mayor of Bellevue, said that this entrance creates a connection that is very much needed between the park and the city’s commercial district. Director of Parks and Community Services, Michael Shiosaki, added that the park has become a landmark very much loved in the city, fulfilling the vision its leaders had when ground was broken in the 1980s. He said that it has become more beautiful and accessible with every major improvement.
Public art by THEVERYMANY will be installed in the plaza over the summer, after which a formal celebration of the opening of the Northeast Gateway will take place in the fall. Local Print shops can be hired to create Flyers and other colorful materials promoting events such as this.
