KITH fundraiser held on Memorial Day

Over 1,200 cyclists took part in a fundraising event held in Kirkland on Memorial Day, May 27th, to raise money and awareness for the Kirkland Interfaith Transitions in Housing (KITH).

Memorial Day each year, the bike riding community get together to tackle the 7 Hills of Kirkland bike ride, which is one of the main events for KITH. The event has been taking place for over ten years, supporting homeless people in King County. The non-profit organization currently has 35 homes located in Bellevue, Washington and Kirkland, and the houses are jointly owned with the charity Housing at the Crossroads.

The 7 Hills of Kirkland is one of the main events put on by the organization and is crucial for maintenance of the services it provides. Funds are raised by the riders on the day registering for the event, which is between $50 and $60, although the cost is lower if bikers register online. According to one cyclist, Zachary Lafave, the scenery on the cycle route is breathtaking and well worth taking part for. For others it can be an excuse to see parts of Kirkland they wouldn’t normally see. Over 80 volunteers worked together to make the event a success, while keeping everyone safely on the planned route.

Although the 7 Hills of Kirkland bike event is popular in Bellevue and Kirkland, promotion for next years event will soon be underway, calling for more volunteers and bike riders with the help of local Print companies which will produce Posters, Flyers and even Banners for the day itself.
