Wendell J. Shirley has been appointed to lead the Bellevue Police Department. Shirley is replacing Police Chief Steve Mylett, who will become the chief of police in Akron, Ohio.
Shirley has over 25 years of experience in law enforcement and was hired as assistant chief in March. This appointment by City Manager Brad Miyake is on an interim basis until a permanent replacement is found. Miyake expressed his pleasure that Shirley has agreed to serve as interim chief at this time within the Department. Miyake added that he is confident in Shirley’s leadership abilities and said he is looking forward to working with him. Such announcements are often made known throughout a community with poster printing.
Shirley said that he is both humbled and honored to be able to work with the women and men at the Bellevue Police Department. He added that the safety of the community will be the highest priority of the department, put together using a diverse and inclusive approach in the best interest of everyone. He expressed in confidence in being successful in his efforts despite the many challenges police departments face these days.
Shirley has been an officer for many years in the Santa Monica, California Police Department. He returned to public service two years ago after the calls for police reform and social justice. Shirley will begin his new role in early August.
