"Human vending machine" helps raise money for Michigan

Students at Bellevue High school banded together to collect money for residents of Flint, Michigan to purchase bottled water.

The name of the fundraiser was BHStoFlint. Students enlisted the help and support of local businesses who offered to put up donation Boxes for the effort. It was an opportunity for businesses to hand out custom Business Cards and custom Pens to promote their business while helping support local fundraising efforts.

Another way the students raised money was by arranging a little competitive fun within the teaching staff, where the highest fundraiser would be awarded a pie in the face (most likely by a chosen student). The students also created a video for their school where they could provide information on the issues facing the residents of Flint and information on the various ways to donate funds.

The most unique part of this fundraiser was a “human vending machine” where a cardboard machine was created and a human hand would collect the money and dispense a bottle of water. Some students were generous enough to donate $20 for a bottle.

The event was an educational opportunity for the clubs involved in the fundraiser by affording the students more insight into the issues that face the residents of Flint, some of whom do not have the means to obtain the supplies they need.

The fundraiser raised over $1,700 which the students turned over to the United Way of Genesee County’s Flint Water Fund. The money will be used to help residents purchase bottles of water, filters, and support services.
