The city of Bellevue will be closing 1.5 miles of residential streets to most vehicular traffic as part of its Healthy Streets pilot project.
The streets to be closed will be 165th and 166th Avenues Northeast and Southeast Fourth Street. These two streets were selected as they are near other streets that can be used by drivers as short detours, have relatively low traffic volumes, connect to commercial centers that provide essential services, and are sufficiently long for walking and riding bikes. They also do not have sidewalks and are close to parks.
Non-local traffic will not be allowed on these streets to provide more room for pedestrian traffic in order to follow guidelines for social distancing. Essential services, such as delivery vehicles, garbage and recycling pickups, emergency response vehicles, and access for residents will be maintained, as well as parking on the street. Signs created by local Print shops can be used to direct traffic around such streets and provide more information on their usage.
This pilot project follows a trend in neighboring Seattle and other cities across the country to provide areas for residents to get out and exercise, and get to their destinations safely.
The Traffic Department of Bellevue will be looking for feedback from residents on the implementation of these Healthy Streets.
