A Department of Ecology grant from the state will be used by the Fire Department in Bellevue to purchase the first electric fire engine in the city.
Set to be one of the first electric fire engines in a municipality in the country, the Pierce Volterra will be at Fire Station 1 on Bellevue Way SE.
Jay Hagan, chief of the fire department, said that the department is looking forward to leading not only the state but the country by showing how an environmentally friendly fire engine can be efficient without sacrificing performance or safety. Informing residents of such additions to a department often means ordering Flyers and other materials created by local Print shops.
The grant of $649,000 was made available through the Volkswagen Settlement Grant and Washington State Clean Diesel programs, and will cover up to 25% of the cost of the new fire engine.
The manager of the sustainability program in the city, Ana Hagerup, said that adding an electric fire engine to the fleet aligns with the sustainability plan of the city, which is being accelerated this year and enables the city to be closer to its target of electrifying its fleets, and its goal to reduce carbon emissions in the city by 80% within the next 30 years.
Planning for the acquisition of the fire engine will begin this year and procurement and delivery are expected in 2025 or 2026.
