The American Public Works Association (APWA) has given the Bellevue Transportation Department a Project of the Year Award for 2024.
The award recognizes project that increases the safety of pedestrians in the downtown area, including to and from the Bellevue Transit Center.
The award was given in the category of transportation projects that cost less than $5m. It highlights excellence in construction and design, and recognizes efforts where contractors, public agencies, and consultants work together.
Announcements of such awards are often made known throughout a city with flyer printing.
The project raised the intersections of 108th and 110th Avenues and Northeast Sixth Street to be at the same level as sidewalks surrounding the intersection. Raised intersections provide an improved connection from the sidewalk, which can be helpful to those using mobility devices, reinforces safe speeds for those who are driving, and improves the visibility of pedestrians. These raised intersections also support the Grand Connection, which is a signature corridor focused on pedestrians through the heart of the downtown.
Andrew Singelakis, Transportation Director, expressed how honored the department was to be recognized by the APWA for this project, reflecting its commitment to providing seamless and safe connections for people walking in the downtown area.
The award will be presented to the city at the national conference of the APWA in September.
