Amazon senior vice president of worldwide operations, Dave Clark, said the vision of the company is:
“to create an urban campus in downtown Bellevue where employees will all be within walking distance of each other and have easy access to public transit.”
The move is in response to several factors, one of which is that many technology companies are developing their offices on both sides of Lake Washington and competing for talent, particularly those who prefer not to commute. Jeff Bezos, who founded Amazon in 1994 in Bellevue, has said the city has a business-friendly environment with many amenities, a high quality of life, and a talented workforce.
This month, the move to Bellevue will start with the Global Delivery Services organization of fewer than 1,000 employees joining 700 employees already working in Bellevue. Additional moves will take place in early 2021 and each move will notify teams a year in advance. The entire move is expected to be completed by the end of 2023. Stationery printers are often hired following such moves when a change of address occurs.
Bellevue Mayor, John Chelminiak, said that downtown Bellevue should see a gain of about 2,500 jobs as a result of this move.
