Classical ballet coming to Auburn
One of the most famous of all ballets is coming to Auburn.
“Swan Lake” by Tchaikovsky is the story of Prince Siegfried, who sees Odette, who is under a wizard’s spell that turns her into a swan. The spell can only be broken if someone promises to love Odette forever. Siegfried swears to do so, but the sorcerer transforms Odile, his daughter, into Odette’s twin and Siegfried confuses the two. His mistake condemns Odette to life as a swan, but she prefers death. Siegfried leaps into the lake and dies with her, breaking the spell.
The ballet premiered in 1877 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, and is now a standard work for companies all over the world. Productions have changed over time, but most troupes still base their version on a revival by Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa, presented in 1895 at St. Petersburg’s Imperial Mariinsky Theatre.
This performance will be danced by artists from the Grand Kyiv Ballet, which organizes tours for Ukrainian ballet dancers. It was founded in 2014 by Oleksander Stoianov, who is also the artist director and principal dancer. He and ballerina Kateryna Kukhar perform the leading roles, and bring the spirit of Ukraine to audiences. The Kyiv ballet has had several successful international tours.
“Swan Lake” will be performed May 17 at the Auburn Riverside Theatre, at 7.00 pm. When they plan events like this, organizers often use brochure printing to create programs for audiences who can learn about the performers.
