Grammy-winning artist plays Brattleboro

An artist whose life has been interwoven with music will appear soon in Brattleboro.

Ruthie Foster grew up in Gause, Texas, listening to her grandmother, mother, and gospel artists such as the Blind Boys of Alabama and the Gospel Keynotes. Despite loving the music, she preferred to write songs that others would perform, or playing the piano or guitar in the background.

However, thanks to vocal coaching from her grandmother and support from her mother, she began to realize her vocal power and emerged as a musician, songwriter, and talented singer.

She studied music in Waco at a community college, then enlisted in the Navy, where she was chosen to be a member of the Navy vocal group “Pride.” After leaving the service, she moved to New York City where she continued songwriting.

Her career shifted when her mother became ill, and she returned to Texas as a caregiver. This shaped her career as a singer, songwriter, and storyteller. She began to write folk, blues, and gospel songs about loss, love, and resilience.

Foster signed with Blue Corn Music, an independent label that released 10 of her albums. Her 2025 effort “Mileage,” on Sun Records, secured her first Grammy award for Best Contemporary Blues Album.

Ruthie Foster will be at The Stone Church on Friday, August 14. Events like this can be publicized when organizers use poster printing to create advertisements.
