Special event celebrates young artists
Young artists in Brattleboro will have a chance to shine soon in a two-day event.
The Vermont Jazz Center and the 118 Elliot Art Gallery are teaming up to showcase jazz ensembles from high school and college. The first day will conclude with a performance by the jazz ensembles, and the second will include a free clinic led by Ulysses Owens Jr., who has three Grammys to his credit.
The full schedules for the event are still being planned, but the highlight is sure to be Owens’s performance with his Generation Y Ensemble. Ownes is a bandleader, composer, and drummer, and a multi-faceted artist who works with the community, writes books, directs large ensembles, and plays the drums.
Owens appeared on recordings with the Christian McBride Big Band on the 2012 recording “The Good Feeling,” and with Kurt Elling, which brought another Grammy win. His third Grammy came in 2023, for his work with Bijon Watson, Steven Feifke, and the Generation Gap Jazz Orchestra. His worked as a bandleader on the album “A New Beat” that sat atop the JazzWeek chart for eight weeks.
He is the founder and drummer for the Ulysses Owens Jr. Big Band, founded Generation Y (a group comprising emerging artists), and is on the jazz faculty at The Julliard School.
The Emerging Artist Festival is set for Friday, November 7 and Saturday, November 8 at the Vermont Jazz Center. Advertising for events like this may include colorful posters, which organizers can find at print shops.
