Golfing for a cause in Springfield

An upcoming golf tournament will be fun and support a great cause at the same time.

The Springfield Golf and Country Club will host the 2024 DC Seabee Golf Tournament, which honors the legacy and history of the U.S. Navy Seabees. The Seabees (the nickname stands for CB, which is short for construction battalion) built bases and airfields for U.S. forces.

In 1940, anticipating war, the U.S. Navy began employing civilian contractors to build overseas bases. After the conflict broke out, civilians could no longer be used but Rear Admiral Ben Moreell, recognizing the value of having bases available, requested permission to establish a special organization to support Marine and Navy operations in remote areas. They would also, as military personnel, be able to defend themselves. Permission was granted, and the first Naval Construction Battalions were activated on January 5, 1942. In their 82-year history, the Seabees have participated in every conflict in which the U.S. has engaged.

The history of the Seabees is maintained by the Navy Seabee Foundation, which is the recipient of benefits from the tournament. The foundation reaches out to Seabees currently on duty, and supports historic sites like the Navy Seabee Museum. It also provides scholarships to children and grandchildren of Seabees.

The tournament is June 10, with registration at 10.30 am, lunch at 11.00 am, a shotgun start at 12.00 pm, and dinner at 5.30 pm. Organizers of events like this frequently use brochure printing to create an informative program for attendees.
