An annual event in Springfield reinforces the bond between the community and the military in the area, though it did not start out with that purpose.
The Springfield Bridge Walk is held every year, as participants walk across the Veterans Bridge to American Legion Post 176. The first walk took place in 2009 as a way to celebrate new lights that were installed on Veterans Bridge. Since then, it has transformed into a celebration of community, and commemorates the signing of the Army/Community Covenant that recognizes the mutual support and regard among the local communities, the state, and the active duty, National Guard, and reservists and their families in the area.
This year, the event begins with participants gathering at 9.30 am at Springfield Plaza, with the walk starting at 10.00 am at the intersection of Amherst Avenue and Bland Street. Those taking part will cross the Veterans Bridge and end the walk at American Legion Post 176. After the walk, the post will be the venue for a celebration that includes displays by local businesses and community groups, refreshments of various kinds including food vendors, and live entertainment and music.
Veterans Bridge is the site of these walks because it is a vital link directly to Springfield’s center. The event is scheduled for August 22. Events like this benefit when organizers work with banner printing to provide suitable decorations for outdoor use.
