Concerned that Signs and clutter providing directions and information may begin to litter the streets and detract from its beauty, the Alexandria government launched the Wayfinding program in 2010, and has now installed Wayfinding Signs in the Old Town area in keeping with the initiative.
Furthermore, it has plans in place later this year to make it easier for motorists to find what they are looking for more easily.
The informational kiosks were carefully designed to ensure they offered an adequate amount of information while adding to the aesthetic appeal of the town. The initial 28 four-sided kiosks offer directions to popular shops and other destinations in the immediate area. They also include a list of historic events that took place where they are located.
These initial mini-kiosks were created to encourage foot and bicycle traffic to help control road congestion and potentially encourage more business to downtown shops.
In keeping with the guidelines of the Wayfinding program, the city plans to install an additional 60 vehicular directional Signs during the summer of 2017.
Local vendors, museums, and shop owners can take part by printing Brochures that provide the information available on the mini-kiosks near their buildings. This will give their visitors the opportunity to have the maps and other information at their fingertips as they tour Old Town, and they can become a unique keepsake after they return home.
